Why Should You Join The Gym?
The gym. A place to lift heavy weights, get super fit and build a great looking body. Right?! Kind of but, not really…
Don’t get me wrong, the physical aspect of the gym is incredible! But if you know me and my content well, you’ll know I’m always talking about helping others become stronger inside and OUTSIDE the gym. The gym completely changed who I am as a person. It changed my life.
If you’re stuck between a rock and a hard place at the moment, trying to determine whether you should adopt a healthy lifestyle and join a gym, this is for you. It will absolutely change your life! And even though I talk mainly about the gym here, being active and living a healthy lifestyle, in general, will change your life.
The gym taught me that I can achieve anything I set out to achieve. It taught me that I can get through anything. It taught me dedication and hard work. It also taught me patience.
To squat 100kg has been a goal of mine for a long time. I have always naturally been a weak child so this was a challenge for me. The day I got to 90kg, I was so excited that I was so close to 100kg. It was an absolute struggle but the feeling of being closer to my goal lit me up.
A couple days later I decided I wanted to try 95kg. I knew in my mind that jumping to 100kg would be too much to handle. I mean, not only had I just got to 90kg but a jump to 95kg straight away… that’s already a lot.
I don’t know if you realise, but the key word there is “in my mind”. I knew “in my mind” that I couldn’t do it. But you know what? The excitement got the better of me and in that session, I didn’t jump to 95kg. I jumped to 100kg! And I did it!!
When your body is under a huge amount of weight, and you’re at the bottom of the rep, it’s hard. You need to push that weight all the way back up. Your muscles are weak and your mind can sometimes try to make you believe you can’t do it. You ultimately have two choices: Push the weight back up or drop it.
The gym teaches you to embrace failure
I’ve done both, and failing in the gym serves a purpose, but there’s no better feeling than proving yourself wrong and pushing that weight all the way back up.
It’s the same thing in life. Whether you’re into the gym or not, I’m sure we can all agree that we get some pretty rough things thrown at us in life. We go through some challenges and jump over some hurdles. And when we do, we have the same two choices. Push back or back down. Fight or flight.
The gym teaches you resilience
Being able to push through at the gym, proves that you’re able to push through anything. Just when you think you can’t overcome something in your life, you prove yourself wrong and do just that.
Breaking through that barrier can be tough mentally. Our whole lives, people like you and me are tricked into thinking we can’t do this and we can’t do that. We put ourselves into boxes. We say no to opportunities, purely because we have a belief instilled within us. A belief that says “That’s not for you.”
Where the gym comes into this is through the results you can obtain once you decide that you CAN. I never thought I could achieve the goals I wanted to achieve, both in life and in the gym. Then one day I looked in the mirror and saw a completely new body staring back at me.
I’ve always been naturally thin, so much so that I once got bullied for looking anorexic. I’d always wanted to grow muscles like girls I saw on Instagram but didn’t have the self-belief that I could. I worked hard anyway, not hoping for much. Then one day I realised how far my body has come and it completely changed my mindset. It empowered me to realise that sticking to what you’re doing, through all the negative thoughts and discouraging comments, gets you to your goals. Trust me when I say – If you can transform your body in the gym, you can seriously reach every goal you set for yourself.
Just like the gym, you won’t always get it right the first time. You might have to wait a while to see any results. But the results will come. They always come. In life and in the gym.
You have the power to change
Next time you’re feeling down in the self-doubting dumps, I want you to go to the gym. I want you to pick a weight you don’t think you can do just yet. I want you to try an exercise that’s “too hard”. I want you to do something you think you suck at. And I want you to prove yourself wrong.
Give me a “YESSSS!!” in the comments if you’re with me girls.
Do that in the gym. Make sure you do it day after day, week after week. Prove yourself wrong in the gym and after a while, you’ll be doing the same in life.
