How To Stick To Healthy Eating – It Doesn’t Have To Be Boring!
When you think healthy eating, what’s the first thing that pops into your mind? Bland, boring food? Salads? Celery? I know, that’s what I used to think too. It honestly makes so much sense that people question how I manage to eat healthy all the time. It almost seems like a secret that healthy eating doesn’t have to be bland and boring. And the thing is, if you actually want to stick to healthy eating, it can’t be.
The following 5 things are my secret to being able to maintain a healthy diet without ever feeling restricted or giving in to cravings.
When I first started overhauling my unhealthy diet and swapping out my unhealthy eating habits, I didn’t do so overnight. There’s no way I would make all the changes I made in the snap of a finger. As many people do, I would have fallen straight back into my unhealthy habits in a heartbeat. Whenever you’re making changes to your lifestyle, it’s important to start slow and introduce changes gradually rather than jumping straight into the deep end.
By making smaller changes and allowing your body and your mind to adjust, you’re setting yourself up for success. The transition from how you’re eating now to the healthier diet you want will be much easier and more maintainable. That’s what we all want at the end of the day right?!
The key to healthy eating is variety. Simple as that. Of course you’re going to get bored eating the same meals every day. It only makes sense that eating salad for every meal is going to put you off. If you want to create a healthy lifestyle that is not only maintainable but actually enjoyable too, you need to make sure that your meals include a whole lot of variety.
This does take quite a bit of planning and trying new foods you’ve never thought of eating before but it’s not that hard in all honesty. I usually look to Pinterest for inspo on healthy meals. Once you have an idea of what types of healthy foods you like, what goes together well and how to plan meals that are healthy, it becomes as easy as regular cooking!
Another important factor in ensuring you stick to healthy eating is making sure your food isn’t bland. This can catch a lot of people out. So many of the sauces and marinades available on the shelves of supermarkets are filled with sugar and extremely high in sodium, making them a lot more unhealthy than you think.
There are still so many different ways to flavour your healthy meals to ensure they still taste great. I personally love using herbs and spices. Most herbs and spices that you buy separately only contain one ingredient – the actual herb/spice! You can use just one or combine a few together to make up your own unique flavour combinations. Most of the spice mixes you buy that are filled with sugar and excess sodium can be recreated at home by just using the individual herbs and spices listed on the back and skipping the sugar and salt.
You can also make your own sauces and marinades at home from fresh ingredients to flavour your meals. If you’re strapped for time but don’t mind spending a little extra, health food stores are usually filled with healthy sauces and marinades that taste amazingggg!
This is by far my favourite element of eating healthy because I just love being creative and experimenting. Sometimes you crave unhealthly foods, such as pancakes – I always do! There’s no way an apple will cut it when these kinds of cravings kick in. That’s when you turn to your good friend Google and Pinterest. Search for healthy versions of the treats you like and recreate them for yourself.
I’m not gonna lie, sometimes what you create is not going to taste good at all. But when you find a healthy alternative that you love, you’re going to be in healthy food heaven! It took me 6 different healthy pancake recipes that tasted average to find the one that tastes exactly like the real thing. Don’t be afraid to experiment!
This is an important aspect to help you stick to healthy eating. Rather than restricting yourself, you’re eating a healthier alternative and having fun while trying to create it. This is probably one of the biggest things that have helped me maintain my healthy diet.
You might have read through these tips and they sound good, but you’re still confused. That’s okay!
