The Essentials Of A Perfect Morning Routine
The way you start your morning impacts the way the rest of your day turns out. Without a solid morning routine to start you off on the right foot, you’re not likely to be the best you can be throughout your day. My morning routine is something that always sets my day up to be productive and positive. Without it, I almost don’t feel like myself. I’ve added a lot of things and taken out a lot more over the past two years until I found these 8 steps that I can’t live without.
#1 Get out of bed within 5 minutes – don’t press snooze!!
Commit to getting out of bed pretty much as soon as you wake up. Springing out of bed in the morning is the best way to start your day. It’s like you’re owning the day. You’re taking charge. A little hack I like to use is to place my alarm on the other side of the room, forcing me to get up and start my day within seconds of it going off. No more accidental sleep in’s here.
Drink 500ml-1L of water as soon as you wake up. Immediately. Most of us aren’t drinking anything all night because we’re obviously asleep. So upon waking up, our bodies are actually dehydrated and in need of water. I started drinking 500ml of water after waking up a couple years ago and now I can’t do without it. It’s a great way to start the day feeling fresh. Initially, I’d recommend having the bottle ready the previous night. After a couple weeks it will just become a habit you can’t live without!
This is my favourite part of my morning routine. Before you check your phone, or go on the computer or do anything else, meditate. It can be 5 minutes or it can be 50. It doesn’t matter. What matters is that you do it. Meditation allows your mind to free itself from the millions of thoughts constantly going through it and return to the present moment. This doesn’t sound like much but the benefits carry through to so many different aspects of your life.
Once you get yourself into the habit of meditation, which can take a while, you’ll be happier. You will notice that you’re calmer and able to think more logically and clearly. The actions you take every day will have more purpose behind them and you’ll be more productive. Rather than seeing the bad in everything, you’ll have a more “glass half full” outlook. It will seriously change your life. And it only starts with about 5 minutes a day.
If you haven’t heard much about meditation or ever considered adding it to your morning routine, watch this video. It was created by YouTuber Rochelle Fox as part of her Mindspo series. I first found it close to when she published it and since then I’ve watched it a number of times. It paints a very accurate picture of the difference meditating makes, and I think it’s the best description of the difference meditation makes that I have found.
#4 Start your morning tech-free!
This is admittedly one of the hardest tips to implement but it makes such a difference. I personally have on and off periods when it comes to this one but I’m seriously working towards sticking to it. As a part of your morning routine, you should stay off your phone for at least 30 minutes. Your morning should be for YOU not for the rest of the world. This very simple step is such an effective one that has a huge impact on your productivity and overall mood for the day.
#5 Start your day with warm lemon water
This is usually used as a detox type thing but going beyond that, drinking a cup of lemon water in the morning is amazing at waking you up. It also has so many health benefits from promoting glowing skin, to high energy levels, to reducing bloat. I’ve also added ginger and turmeric to my warm lemon water in the past. The ginger is great to promote immunity and the turmeric acts as an anti-inflammatory. All three together create the perfect concoction to start your day. Just make sure you drink it through a straw to protect your pearly whites!
#6 Go outside and get some fresh air!
It doesn’t have to be for long, even just 10 minutes of fresh air as soon as you wake up will energise you and allow you to feel ready for the day. This tip is especially great for you gals who have jobs indoors. You’ve just spent 8 hours indoors sleeping and you’re on your way to spending another 8 hours give or take for your work. Allowing yourself just 10 minutes to get outside and feel the breeze on your skin and the fresh air in your lungs is essential for a great day.
#7 Move your body
You didn’t think I forgot all about fitness, did you?! But fear not, if you’re not a crazy gym-goer like me, this can mean going for a walk or even dancing to your favourite song while you get ready for work. Anything that gets your blood pumping will instantly energise you and release the endorphins you need to feel good all day. Even on my rest days from the gym, I still try to move my body in some way because I really notice a huge difference when I don’t.
#8 Be grateful
This is by far the most important step. Every person has their own problems – we’re all going through something. But when you think about it, we’re all so lucky to be where we are. Being grateful and acknowledging all the good in your life will seriously change your entire outlook on life. Whether you list a few things you’re grateful for in your head on the way to work or whether you write them down as soon as you wake up, appreciate everything you have in your life right now. Once you do this, you will see the world around you begin to change.
As with any changes you make in your life, it’s best to start small and gradually build up to incorporating more and more as you go. Start adding a couple of these changes to your morning routine and after about a week you should already notice some sort of difference no matter which you started with. I’d love to know if you have any additions that have a made a major change to your day so comment them in the comments section! I cannot wait to try them all out!
As always, have a beautiful day Holistic Fam!
